Julian Bond, now chairman emeritus of the NAACP, was a Georgia state representative when this photo was taken in 1971. He dropped out of college in 1960 to join the sit-in movement against segregated restaurants in Atlanta and later helped found the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee.
